Hay on Wye WWI Commemoration weekend

To mark the centenary of the end of World War One, a weekend of commemoration is to take place in Hay-on-Wye on the 4th and 5th August.

The culmination of a series of commemorations that have taken place since 2014 and organised by the Royal British Legion, the town will be welcoming living history groups, who will be camped throughout the town, providing opportunities, on Saturday 4th August, for the public to learn how their ancestors worked and lived on the Front during the War. At 2pm The Surrey Police Band and soloist Emma Brown will perform a concert in the grounds of Cartref Care Home. Emma is a great supporter of the Royal British Legion and sings regularly at events throughout Europe and further afield.

On Sunday 5th August, the weekend will end with a parade and service, the purpose of which is to remember the men of Hay and the surrounding area who made the ultimate sacrifice. As well as Hay Town Council, invitations to take part have been sent to the community and parish councils of the villages from Bronllys and Talgarth to Eardisley and Peterchurch. The ever-popular Swansea City Pipe Band will be welcomed once more to lead the Parade, which steps off from the town car park at 12.10pm and the Surrey Police Band will head up a concert on the memorial square that also includes Emma Brown, the Talgarth Male Choir, Wern Fach Choir and Rhayader Voices in Unity. A highlight of the concert will be the performance of “Home at Last” composed especially for this event by local musician John Rees and arranged by the Musical Director of the Surrey Police Band, Graham Atterbury.

The service, at 2.00pm, will be led by a military padre and in addition to the traditional Last Post followed by a silence, wreaths will be laid by, amongst others, the Lord Lieutenant of Powys The Hon.Dame Shan Legge-Bourke DCVO, the MP Chris Davies and Kirsty Williams AM. Members of the public will then be invited to lay 100 red roses in memory of The Fallen. Association and RBL Standards are invited to take part in this event and should contact the RBL organiser, Kelvyn Jenkins on 07527 696968 for more details.
